INTERVIEW | THOMAS GANDEY AKA CAGEDBABY

– What does the rest of the year hold for you outside of Ibiza?

I’m been on lockdown in my Studio in France for the last few weeks and leaving for weekend shows only, fortunately I’ve held on to some of my tan.  I’m really looking forward to getting back to Berlin for August to finish an album I started with Matt Edwards (Radio Slave) we’ve been working on it for a while and time to bring it to fruition  gig highlights I’m massively psyched to be going back to the USA in September especially back to Las Vegas and onto Hawaii which is my first time there.  I’ve started putting a fully live electronic show together for next year and I look forward to playing live again and bringing it to Ibiza.

– What can we expect from your nights at Aura and who do you have playing?

The Paradise 45 parties at Aura are for the Disco heads on the island, our parties in London at the Dalston Superstore have been flying.  Guy Williams & I started this party to give our Nu/Deep disco tracks a voice and to get our friends in the Disco scene involved. For August 11th we are excited to have Justin Robertson presents  Deadstocks 33’s and for our September show we have Maxxi Soundsystem playing. Aura is such a great party spot, the food, ambience and cocktail bar make it a superb destination for us to have our parties there

– Which night / dj are you most looking forward to seeing?

I always love my shows for We Love at Space, its still the Daddy of all parties, a festival every Sunday my next show there is Sunday 7th August playing on the Terraza.  Its James Zabelias Birthday and 2 many DJ’s are playing.  I have a sneaky suspicion its going to be wild. I have put together a very special set with all new edits and new forthcoming releases for Southern Fried to be road tested on the sickest system in the Med.

– How do you think the music been played in Ibiza has changed over the past few years?

Its expanded massively, there’s much more variety available, i find it very refreshing it isn’t all minimal and Balearic beats, everything going on that’s how it should be.  Variety is the spice of life lets abuse it. Theres also more and more live shows going on and the productions are getting bigger and bolder  It should be about the party not just the DJ.

– Where do you see it going?

It would be great to think that there would be a resurgence of the hippies and beatniks but I thinks it’s all getting much slicker these days and attracting a more quality bespoke crowd who like a unique experience.  The opening of Ushuaia has a tint of Vegas in it,  I think it’s the start of some big changes ala resort style vacations.   I’ve been having great fun at Pikes hotel this year, its been taken over by Ibiza Rocks but it’s still moderately priced and as kitsch as can be.

– Are there any secret tips about the island you can share with us?

I love heading up to the North end of the island to find peace,  its full of smaller coves and bays and you can still find your own private beach in height of summer , we had a little party in Cala Mastella, it’s a super small beach still wholly untouched and far from the madding crowd.

– Where’s your favourite place to eat on the island?

Theres such a massive gastronomic choice on the island, i would say Aura is coming up trumps this year with their new menu,  but i also love a place just further down the San Joan road called Balafia,  traditional family owned chargrill & definitely not for the vegetarians.   I also like to eat simple fish salads at beach cafe’s or take my own picnic out to beautiful spots there was a guy cooking his catch up at Calle D’en Serra and selling sardines when i was there last which was a real treat.

– What would you recommend is a must do for anyone heading to Ibiza for the first time?

Get involved but make sure you see some daylight and get the whole experience.

– Can you some up ibiza in a few words?

If its good enough for Terry Thomas…..
