JAMIROQUAI INTERVIEW

What are you most looking forward to this year?
This tour! Honestly, I’ve been looking forward to getting on the road again for probably the past two years, since the last time we toured, in fact. I never get tired of it. I mean, how could you? I defy anyone to say playing in front of thousands of people could be anything except the ultimate buzz.

What is your favourite Ibiza memory?
Actually, the first time was pretty memorable. It was a crazy place in those days and I was probably a bit crazier then too, which was always going to be a dangerous combination haha! We played a great gig and then went off to enjoy the delights of the island. I was determined to see the sunrise, so found a great spot on a beach and watched it with some friends and a few beers thinking, it doesn’t get much better than this!

Can you recommend a must visit spot?
In the early days it was the clubs, but you know, I’ve always loved gorgeous, sandy beaches. It’s always been my ambition to play a series of gigs on beautiful beaches around the world and there are a few in Ibiza I’d like to play on. I can’t recall all their names but I know we drove up to the north of the island, around San Juan. I hired a jeep, then just drove around, stopping at wherever looked nice, eating great food and just relaxing, you know. I remember getting ideas for a few songs out there, so it’s a special place.

Fave hidden gem?
Someone told me to visit S’Estanyol beach while I was on the island, so perhaps this year is the time for me to check it out after the gig.

What’s your top prediction for this Summer?
Well if I had to really stick my neck out, it would be that Vettel is going to win the F1 Championships this year.

GUIDE | TOP PLACES TO GRAB A COFFEE

With the new version of the APP you are able to check-in and rate venues depending on how ‘hot’ they are. We combined what our users are saying right now, the curators & Ibiza editors recommendations to select their top spots to grab a coffee in Ibiza.

Here in no particular order are the top destinations;

Passion Juice Bar

“Yousef’s choice for where to get some healthy alternatives!”

This gem will convert anyone and have them indulging in fresh salads, wholesome burgers or the famously moist carrot cake. Super healthy fresh food cafe right in the heart of Playa d’en Bossa. Try the Goia berry juice or the delicious range of breakfast options which are the perfect remedy for a kick-start after a heavy and late night out. The cupcakes are pretty legendary too. Come to think of it, it’s all good at Passion.

Croissant Show

“Run by one of the islands biggest characters a great coffee shop.”

The legendary french breakfast spot also opens all day serving its delicious range of pastries, quiches and the infamous phallic-shaped meringues. It’s known the island over for its delicious pastries and serves the crowds with a high turnover in peak season. Look out for the man behind the show, Andre (the Dali-esque moustache should be enough of a hint).

Café Sidney

“Recommended by Kissy Sellout for best value eats”

Overlooking the luxury cruisers and yachts and with a wonderfully extensive menu catering to laptop-laden power-peeps with a few oddballs thrown into the mix – resulting in a refreshingly bizarre balance. Great for long healthy breakfasts and friendly people at any time of the day. Try the fillet steak drenched in a wine sauce, the great array of salads (delicious coupled with a glass of wine), and of course a satisfying view of the port and old town.

Santa Getrudis

“A tiny village with a “street cafe” feel to it.”

Santa Gertrudis has expanded rapidly but carefully over the last few years. Smart modern villas now line the new streets, the village square has had a makeover and is now a pedestrian friendly plaza and new, hip café bars and restaurants have joined traditional Ibicenco establishments as the village’s eatery scene achieved critical mass.

Any time of day is just perfect for a visit to the village. With arts and crafts shops, galleries, and an eclectic mix of clothing and accessories there’s plenty of retail therapy to be had before and after morning coffee, lunch, afternoon ‘merienda’ or dinner.

Check out the APP to see what venues have the mist heat and love on the island right now.

LEE CURTISS

We are happy to announce Lee Curtiss to our list of curators. Over the past two years Lee Curtiss, the Detroit house/techno producer has been responsible for injecting some primal funk and sensuous soul back into 4/4 beats at a time when we needed them most – washing away the robotic stiffness of mnml and soulless machine techno. Last year he set Ibiza on fire taking his sound to place like DC10 and going down a storm. We got the chance to ask him a few questions, you will find more of his recommendations on the app itself….

What’s your top prediction for Ibiza this summer?

My prediction for ibiza is that (in the words of DJ Godfather) player haters in the house will be seen and pointed out. dance music is progressing in a creative and entertaining way. for an island that lives and breathes with this art form, i can only assume that things are going to get out of hand and it will be a summer to remember.

What’s your favourite hidden Ibiza gem?

There’s this restaurant in the middle of the countryside in the north of the Island (I think it’s called Balafia but you’ll need to check this) which serves the most amazing grilled meat. It’s super rustic and you sit outside underneath lemon trees which smell amazing.

PETE GOODING INTERVIEW

Pete Gooding is a permanent fixture in Ibiza and will be an official island resident throughout Aug and Sep. He will be taking up his residency once more at Cafe Mambo as well as playing dates at Ushuaia Hotel and various other one of special guest appearances. Be sure to check the app for all the details.

-What are you looking forward to most about the island?

I’m looking forward to simply getting out there as I moved to L.A earlier this year and been in the U.K this last moth and can’t go to Ibiza till the end of July but will then be there till the end of the summer. But will be great to get to Cadenza again at Pacha, also looking forward to checking out the Ushuaia Hotel, watching sunsets, popping over to Formentera and eating some great food!

-Have you got one Ibiza memory that stands out the most?

My favourite Ibiza memory is a difficult one, I have so many. It could be my first times out there going to a club back in 1989, or listening to Jose Padilla at Cafe Del Mar, trips to Formentera, some of the amazing gigs I have had playing at all the big clubs and Cafe Mambo, all the great times I have spent with my good friends, too many to choose from to be honest!

– Where is the must visit spot on the island?

Must Visit, again hard to say just one. The Dalt Villa, Formentera, Es Vedra, bars like Cafe Mambo, all the great clubs and venues now here, there are too many great things to do to name one.

– Do you know of any hidden gems or secret spots?

My favourite hidden gem would be the old tower over looking Es Vedra in San Jose and Hotal Torres in Stella Maris.

– Whats your top prediction for the summer?

Top prediction for the summer is that it’s looking like being a vintage summer and going to be very busy!

MEET COLIN PETERS

Whats new on the island this year?

Well the amount of, I suppose you could call them, different / alternative nights. Like “Rock Nights” which is in either, Café Ole or We Love Sundays. Then “Tonight” openend yesterday , with A-trak, Nero and Union.

Now it seems lots of clubs have nicked the idea from Ibiza rocks and are getting live groups in to play. You’ve got “Privelige” on Sundays and then MTV on Fridays, which I’m looking forward to as -well, with Snoop Dogg, Kelis, Duran Duran and Primal Scream. I say the more the better to be honest. That’s the newest thing. It’s not just strictly house music anymore.

So do you think Ibiza rocks opened up the island to new styles of music?

Yeh I think they kind of started it, it’s just taken 6 years for people to realise there’s other ways of doing things, you know. Sometimes it takes time in Ibiza for other styles to crack through. So, yeh, I think Ibiza rocks was def the catalyst it’s just taken a while for people to pick up on it.

Is there a night or act in particular you are looking forward to?

There’s Rock Nights In the Red Box, Café Ole and We Love Sundays.
We love Sundays is always one of my favourite nights, it has been for a long time. Definitely some of the groups at Ibiza Rocks, like Friendly Fires and Metronome who are playing next week. Personally they are going to be my highlights because for me they have been two of the best groups of the year so it will be really good to see them live.
Primal Scream, Skream and Benga and Noisia are going to be a highlight and Jamiroquai because I’ve never seen him live so that will be good. He’s playing a Sunday in August at Privelige. It going to be like a proper concert really!

How does life change during the Ibiza winter season?

It’s a complete shutdown in the winter, it becomes like a little village. It’s really funny to see. I’m used to it being completely deserted with only a man and his dog walking along the beach! Then I was looking out at it a week and a half ago with all these mega yachts and the new Ushuiai Hotel, with loads of people rolling around in the sand, I thought, oh my god what a contrast. Pacha stays open and some bars with one or two little parties but it becomes really quiet and like a small town in the winter

Do you have any favourite spots to eat out?

There’s a place in town Bon Profit Which is really cheap but really good wholesome Spanish food. Also near my house in the centre there’s a little place that sells fruit and veg and they have a little bar next door called Es Tap Nou, Where they do these amazing, salads, for 6 euros or something like that’s. Really good value and it’s a really great salad!

I went to a place for the first time over the weekend called Can Caus in Santa Gertrudis, which is amazing. The meat is called Solomia in Spanish, which are really thin strips of steak. They’re served on a plate over hot coals and you can cook it yourself, so if you want it really bloody or really well cooked you can! The taste was phenomenal, it really was. Highly recommend it if you like meat.

Can you sum up Ibiza for us?

Sun, sea, sangria, sex and sounds!

ES VIVE HOTEL

Probably one of Ibiza’s best known and most luxurious hotels, Es Vive is “Solo para adultos”! Translated that means ” No kids allowed!”.

Situated just outside of Ibiza Town, this hotel literally can cater to your every whim. Packed full of everything from, mouth watering cocktails, spa’s, swimming pool, top class cuisine and  probably, proportionally, more beautfiul people than in most of the world. Being so close to Ibiza town also means you have both the sea on your doorstep, pacha and space just round the corner and the islands best retail therapy spot a short walk away.

We managed to have a chat with the people behind Es Vive and get some recommendations on where to head to make sure you get the most out of any trip to the island!

They say Sands is probably one of the islands best all round spots. Home to both  a great view of the sea but also for the legendary Sands Beach bar and the parties that go down there.  Sands is a must visit!

Unsurprisingly their choice for the best spots to laze by the pool or sip a well made mojito is the Es Vive Pool and bar respectively. Honestly, we can’t really argue, the atmosphere of both is pretty special.

The Passion Cafe is fast, becoming one of the islands best recommendations for where to grab a coffe or a juice and Es Vive agree’s. Finally the best night in Ibiza? Defected at Pacha. This year is going to be huuge!
